When an accident strikes your first question is going to be, ‘what should I do if I’m in a car accident?’  Well, we don’t want there to be any guessing involved- because, after an auto collision, we already know there is going to be stress involved.  That’s exactly the reason we’ve put together this simple step-by-step on what to do in case of a car accident.

Make yourself safe.

Pull over onto the shoulder of the road—if that’s not possible then put your hazards on.

Make sure everyone else is safe.

If anyone is hurt, even a little, call 911.

Call the police if...

  1. Anybody is injured.
  2. If it looks like any of the vehicles involved have more than $2000 of damage.
  3. If any driver involved doesn’t have a drivers licence, registration or insurance.
  4. If any of the vehicles involved aren’t drivable.

Gather information:

  • Get the names of everyone involved.
  • Get the licence plate numbers, makes and models of any other vehicles involved.
  • Get contact info for any eyewitnesses.
  • Get insurance information from the drivers of any other cars involved.
  • Get the names and badge numbers of any police involved.
  • Get the location of the accident.

Take pictures.

Your insurance company and auto body shop will both need them- take lots of pictures of the damage to your vehicle.

Call your insurance company.

Remember, although they can suggest which auto body shop you call, the choice is ultimately yours.
